BACKGROUND

Character Wiki

Gravity Falls is about Dipper and his twin sister Mabel spending the summer with their great-uncle Stan in the mysterious town of Gravity Falls, Oregon. The world they live in is mostly normal (or so they thought), but certain areas like Gravity Falls are magnets for weirdness. The town contains all kinds of mysteries, cryptids, monsters, and conspiracies. Their summer of mysteries and horrors culminates in nothing short of the apocalypse. The twins and their family and friends have to struggle against a dream demon, Bill Cipher, and reverse the apocalypse before it can extend beyond the boundaries of Gravity Falls.

PERSONALITY

Dipper is a very thoughtful and somewhat serious kid who loves solving puzzles and uncovering mysteries. He has a dry and somewhat self-deprecating sense of humor that he uses to engage the world with. Bookish and somewhat socially awkward, he sometimes feels uncomfortable in his own skin, so he tries very hard to act more mature and adult than he is. Fortunately, despite trying a little too hard to be serious, he's still a kid, and can be drawn into funtimes and shenanigans, especially by his twin sister Mabel. Due to realizing he doesn't want to leave his sister behind, Dipper has decided to try slowing down a little on the growing up thing so that he and his sister can face growing up together.

Dipper can be very logical and analytical, which means he's sometimes a grounding influence on the people around him, like his somewhat flighty sister, but sometimes he can over think things until he spins himself in circles and makes himself anxious and paranoid. He has a tendency towards obsession and conspiracy theories that has only been stoked into a roaring flame by the secrets and weirdness he's seen. When he finds himself trapped in Silent Hill, that tendency will likely express in him obsessing over the secrets, conspiracies, and puzzles of the town.

Thought now at stage where he's grown to be a lot more self-assured than he once was, he is still a kid working his way through an awkward stage of life and sometimes has the occasional crisis of confidence. He wishes he was as good at being social as his sister Mabel, and he can sometimes be self-conscious, especially if he's being teased by someone. He often navigates his way through these phases by looking inward at his strengths, and by recognizing that some of things people have tried to make him ashamed of (like liking "girly" music) aren't shameful at all. He's still on the long, bumpy road of learning to be comfortable in his own skin.

When it comes to hero stuff, he's a ferociously brave kid with a very strong will and protective streak. While his obsessive nature has sometimes put himself and other people in danger, he tries just as hard to get people out of it again. When pushed, Dipper can do a complete 180 from seemingly timid kid to total hero, especially if someone else is in danger. Interestingly, this daring isn't because he doesn't understand the consequences - he understands the concept of death and how often he's come close closed to being killed very well. It's just straight up courage, an acceptance that some things are scary and deadly and that the best way to face them is by shutting down his brain and doing daring things.

However, his courage and heroics don't always come with as strong of an edge of compassion and empathy as they should. Dipper and his sister are kids and therefore sometimes have their petty moments and a occasionally have a thoughtlessly cruel side, so they don't always have the best sense of right and wrong. Time with his criminal Grunkle Stan has also led to a predilection towards minor crimes like petty theft or vandalism. (The words "YAY VANDALISM!" may have come out of Dipper's mouth before). Dipper is young and is still developing a sense of morality and that means that his morals can sometimes be skewed, especially if he still feels he's accomplishing the overall "right" thing.

Though Dipper is a ridiculously resilient, scrappy kid, he also carries an undercurrent of trauma with him. Events in the series caused him to grow more paranoid and anxious over time, especially when it came to their longtime enemy Bill Cipher. After Weirdmageddon, these anxieties likely run more deeply than he realizes. He's also grown a little inured to danger, morbid things, and horror in a way that's probably unhealthy. Though he'd be disturbed by watching someone be killed, he's not the kind of kid that will shy away from corpses (beyond a "blech") or be overly terrified of monsters. This will be something of a strength in the game, as the monsters will often only register as a basic threat to life and limb, but not strike him with the same level of dread as they might for some others. However, being desensitized to it all is definitely not great for his long term mental health and adjustment.

ABILITIES

Dipper is a mundane kid with no powers. He's a little clever for his age, ferociously brave at times, and good at puzzles and mysteries but beyond that, a pretty typical 13-year-old.

PERMISSIONS

[OOC]
Backtagging: Yes
Threadhopping: Yes, just ask for logs. Jump in freely on network.
Fourthwalling: Yes. His life is weird enough it'll barely throw him.
Subjects That Bother Me: Sexual assault, child abuse, domestic violence. They're not automatic no's if they come up with your character, but talk to me first. A lot has to do with how they're handled and if I'm not surprised by them.

[IC]
Hugging this character: Yes, but if he doesn't like your character, he might bite.
Kissing this character: No. The only exceptions are if it's a really chaste, innocent puppy crush thing with a character of the same age, or a cheek or forehead kiss from someone with a familial relationship.
Flirting with this character: No, again with the only exception being if it's PG stuff from a teen of the same age.
Fighting with this character: Yes. Be prepared for shin kicks.
Injuring this character (include limits and severity): Yes, but ask first. I'm not a fan of child harm unless it's for a good story reason.
Killing this character: No
Using telepathy/mind reading abilities on this character: Yes, just talk to me first

[SHIPPING]
For the most part, no, but again, a very PG crush thing with someone the same age would be okay. Like "zomg we held hands [hyperventilates]" kinda innocent stuff.

[SMUT]
Hell no and it'd be personally triggering if you even ask so please don't. I shouldn't have to specify this, but RP being what it is, I want to make it clear.

[WARNINGS]
Dipper is from a supernatural canon that got pretty dark at times. Like blood pouring from taxidermy animal heads chanting "Ancient sins," ghosts with missing eyes and axes in their heads, body horror shapeshifting creatures, dream demons, zombies, Lovecraftian bullshit like monsters with 80 faces, apocalyptic shit, upside down blood waterfalls, a petrified throne of human agony, etc etc. Luckily no one really died so he hasn't dealt with a lot of death and the kind of gore that comes with watching someone die.

It didn't get too graphic due to a cartoony art style but since it's not like Dipper sees his world in cartoon-o-vision, it's all pretty real to him. He also has no qualms about talking about the horror in his world in detail because he doesn't realize how terrible it sounds coming from a little kid. He's become a little too inured to morbid and weird things.

If you have a particular horror squick you want to know if he'd mention, feel free to comment here or pm or plurk me, and I can let you know it's in his canon and have him avoid mentioning it. Also let me know if you're bugged by the idea of a child being harmed or in danger. I'll ask if his thread partners are okay with it when it happens, but I won't be going super hard on him actually getting hurt often, since harm to a kid is hard for other characters and players to stomach.
